Manaslu Weather

Manaslu Weather

When planning a trek around Mount Manaslu, one of the most important things to understand is the Manaslu weather. It has 3 climate zones, starting from warm subtropical valleys at 700M to freezing alpine areas above 5,000M.

In spring, temperatures range from 5°C to 20°C, while monsoon temperatures stay between 15°C to 25°C. Autumn brings good weather with temperatures from 10°C to 20°C, whereas winter becomes much colder with temperatures dropping from -5°C to 12°C.

Weather in the Manaslu region also changes with altitude. Lower places like Machha Khola and Jagat are warmer, but higher areas such as Samdo, Dharamsala, and Larke Pass face sharp drops in temperature. Let’s now explore the Manaslu weather in detail.

Why Manaslu Weather Matters for Trek?

Weather has a major impact on every stage of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Temperature, snowfall, rainfall, and wind conditions directly affect trail safety, visibility, altitude challenges, and the overall trekking experience. Here’s why it matters:

  • Trail Safety: Monsoon rain can cause landslides and floods in lower areas like Soti Khola to Jagat.
  • Larkya La Pass Crossing: Heavy snow and strong winds after 10 AM can make crossing the pass dangerous or impossible.
  • Visibility Problems: Clouds, fog, and storms can hide mountain views and make trail navigation harder.
  • Teahouse and Supply Issues: Bad weather sometimes forces local teahouses to close, which can make it hard to find shelter, food, or medical help.
  • Transportation and Itinerary: Rain, snow, or storms can delay road travel, flights, and daily trekking schedules.
  • Packing and Preparation: Understanding seasonal weather helps trekkers to choose the right clothing, sleeping gear, and trekking equipment.

How does the weather change across the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

In just 10–12 days, the trek takes you from warm and humid lower valleys to the cold, high mountains of the Himalayas. Here is a detailed breakdown of how the weather changes across the three different regions of the trek.

Lower Region Weather (Soti Khola to Jagat)

The lower section of the Manaslu Circuit Trek from Soti Khola to Jagat has a warm and humid climate because of its lower elevation. During spring and autumn, daytime temperatures in the lower Manaslu region are warm enough for most trekkers to walk comfortably in t-shirts, trekking pants, shorts, or light hiking clothes. However, monsoon rain can make paths near waterfalls and forest trails muddy and slippery.

  • Elevation Range: 700M – 1,400M
  • Temperature Range: 10°C to 25°C
  • Weather Condition: Warm, humid, and greener than higher regions
  • Trek Difficulty: Moderate

Mid-Region Weather (Deng to Namrung)

The mid-region of the Manaslu Circuit Trek from Deng to Namrung brings a noticeable change in both weather and landscape. As you’ll be above 2,500M, the warm and humid air of the lower valleys is replaced by cooler temperatures and dry mountain air. Dense forests of oak and rhododendron change into pine and fir forests, while Tibetan-style villages start to appear on the route. Morning skies are clear with mountain visibility, but clouds commonly build up later in the afternoon.

  • Elevation Range: 1,500M – 3,500M
  • Temperature Range: 0°C to 15°C
  • Weather Condition: Cooler, drier, and less humid than the lower region
  • Trek Difficulty: Moderate

High Altitude Weather (Samagaon to Larkya La Pass)

Larky La Pass
Larky la pass

The high-altitude section of the Manaslu Circuit Trek from Samagaon to Larkya La Pass has the coldest and most unstable weather on the entire route. Trees slowly disappear, replaced by rocky lands, glaciers, frozen streams, and snow-covered mountains. Even during sunny days, freezing winds can make temperatures feel far colder than they actually are.

  • Elevation Range: 3,500M – 5,160M
  • Temperature Range: -15°C to 10°C
  • Weather Condition: Cold, windy, dry, and highly unpredictable
  • Trek Difficulty: Challenging

Seasonal Weather Breakdown of Manaslu

The weather in Manaslu changes across the four main trekking seasons: spring, monsoon, autumn, and winter. Each season brings different temperatures, trail conditions, mountain views, and trekking challenges. Below, every season is explained clearly in detail.

Spring Weather (March to May)

Spring is one of the best seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek and is the second most popular time after autumn. The weather becomes warmer after winter, and the trails come alive with blooming rhododendron forests, green hills, and clear mountain views of Himalchuli, Mt. Manaslu, Ngadi Chuli, and Ganesh Himal.

Temperatures at lower elevations range from 10°C to 20°C, while in higher areas above 4,000M, temperatures become much colder, and nighttime temperatures can fall between -5°C and -10°C. Spring also brings fresh mountain air, active wildlife, and festivals such as Lhosar (Tibetan New Year) and Saka Dawa (Buddha Jayanti).

Autumn Weather (September to November)

Monsoon is considered the off-season for the Manaslu Circuit Trek because heavy rainfall causes difficult trekking conditions. However, the landscape becomes extremely green and beautiful during this time, with fresh forests and flowing waterfalls. The weather is warm and humid in the lower regions, and rain is frequent in the afternoons and evenings.

Temperatures in lower areas range from 15°C to 25°C, while higher elevations are cooler with nighttime temperatures around 5°C to 10°C. Thick clouds and fog reduce visibility and hide the Himalayan peaks. Trekkers also face slippery trails, landslide risks, muddy paths, and large numbers of leeches on the forest path. Some major attractions of trekking the Manaslu Circuit in the autumn are the stunning views of mountains and skies and the chance to see cultivated fields filled with different crops, such as wheat, rice, barley, maize, sugarcane, etc.

Winter Weather (December to February)

Autumn is considered the best season for trekking in the Manaslu. After the monsoon ends, the rain clears dust and pollution from the atmosphere. The weather is dry, stable, and predictable, with cloudless skies and plenty of sunshine on most trekking days.

Daytime temperatures in mid-altitude villages range from 10°C to 15°C. At higher elevations near Larkya La, nighttime temperatures can fall to around -10°C by November. Autumn is also the main festival season of Nepal, with celebrations like Dashain and Tihar taking place across the country.

Monsoon Weather (June to August)

Winter in the Manaslu Circuit is suitable only for experienced trekkers looking for uncrowded trails and total solitude. The weather is cold and dry, but strong winds and deep snow totally cover the higher regions. Many parts of the trail become almost empty during this season due to extreme conditions.

Temperatures drop sharply at higher elevations, where daytime temperatures stay below 0°C and nighttime temperatures can fall to -20°C to -25°C. The route near Larkya La is blocked by heavy snow, and most teahouses above 3,500 meters also shut down, which creates challenges for finding food and shelter during the trek.

Monthly Weather Guide for Manaslu Trek

Altitude Sickness and Weather: The Intersection Most Guides Ignore

Most trekkers understand altitude sickness and weather as separate problems, but in reality, they work together and directly affect each other. When air pressure drops during a storm, there is less oxygen available in the air. This can make a trekker feel as if they have climbed much higher than they actually have, even while resting at the same place, such as Samdo.

Trekker On Manaslu
Solo trek on manaslu

At high altitude in the Manaslu region, the body must work harder to maintain normal temperature while also coping with low oxygen levels. This double pressure reduces the oxygen available for the brain and muscles. As a result, symptoms of altitude sickness and exposure to cold can look very similar, such as confusion, slow movement, and extreme tiredness. This makes it difficult to quickly identify the real cause of illness, which is why weather conditions must always be considered together with altitude risks during the trek.

What to Pack Based on Manaslu Weather?

Manaslu Circuit Trek weather conditions change quickly with altitude and season, so packing the right gear is very important. A proper layering system helps trekkers stay warm in cold regions, remain comfortable during daytime hikes, and stay protected from rain, snow, and winds. Here are some essential clothing and gear items you should pack for this trek.

Tips to Handle Weather Like a Pro Trekker

Smart preparation and small trekking habits during the Manaslu Trek can help you stay warm, avoid weather-related problems, and move more safely in the mountains. Here are sme tips to handle weather:

  • Fill your Nalgene bottle with boiling water at night and keep it inside your sleeping bag
  • Keep your phone, camera batteries, and power banks inside your sleeping bag or an inner jacket pocket
  • Use Category 4 polarized sunglasses and high-SPF lip balm
  • Remove extra clothing before sweating starts because it can lose heat quickly and can cause the body temperature to drop fast
  • Aim to cross the Larkya La Pass by 10:00 AM to avoid the high-velocity afternoon winds that bring in clouds, drop visibility, and sap your body heat
  • Always keep one pair of thick wool socks strictly for sleeping and never hike in them.

Plan Your Trek with the Right Weather in Mind

The Manaslu weather has a major impact on every part of the trek. Proper preparation and choosing the right trekking season are very important for a successful journey. Most trekkers prefer October and April because these months have good weather, cloud-free skies, and safer trekking routes.
