1. Restricted Area Permit

The Special Restricted Area Permit is a mandatory permit for all foreigners entering the Upper Mustang region. You can’t apply for the special permit independently. There have to be at least two people in the group. It is issued by the Department of Immigration of Nepal located in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Moreover, it cannot be issued unless the application for at least two foreigners is handed in together.

2. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit

The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit is required for entering the Annapurna Conservation Area, which includes parts of the Upper Mustang region. Moreover, you can get the permit either from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or Pokhara or from the ACAP counter in Pokhara.

3. Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card

The TIMS card provides information about the trekker’s safety during the trek and also helps track their movement. Upper Mustang Overland Tour on Jeep ride, takes you from the beautiful Pokhara city starting and ending point of the journey. Covering a distance of a week duration, as drive leads from Pokhara valley towards Far North West beyond the Himalayas.

The adventure continues from low warm paddy farm fields following the main road, and then on dirt mountainous tracks. Drive heads to Kaligandaki River, and in between giant Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Annapurna, which forms the world’s deepest gorge. Following the river upstream towards cooler higher alpine zone reaching the apple country of Tukuche and Marpha charming villages.

The road winds up reaching Jomsom the headquarters town of Mustang district, as the drive follows up around the river valley. Reaching Kagbeni village the entry and exit point of Upper Mustang, a fascinating place to experience.

From Kagbeni onwards within the strong Buddhism culture of Tibetan heritage, the drive follows the Old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Trail. An important caravan route for trade in between Nepal and Tibet, the border to Tibet is situated beyond Upper Mustang.

The drive follows towards Upper Mustang’s dry terrain beneath huge canyon walls and towering windblown cliffs. As the road follows on winding barren country past the nice villages of Chusang, Syangboche crosses over Nyi-La pass. At Lo-Manthang an extra day to enjoy a leisure tour around places of interest visiting its famous old monasteries. Includes tour of former fort palace situated in the center of a town. The palace residence of the last Raja king was Jigme Palbar Bista, who lived from the age of 86 till 2017.

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Kathmandu

Welcome to Kathmandu, the vibrant capital city of Nepal. On your arrival at the Tribhuwan International Airport, a representative from Himalayan 360 will be there to receive and escort you to the hotel. Later in the evening, you will join for the welcome dinner hosted by us. Overnight at hotel.

Day 2:
Kathmandu sightseeing and preparation for Mustang

A free day in Kathmandu with a short tour around Kathmandu world heritage sites, and a visit to old Durbar / Palace Square. Steeped with historical and religious monuments and palace with royal courtyard. Enjoy tour of old Swayambhunath one of the main landmark of the country, Buddhist monuments facing great views of Kathmandu city. Afternoon free at leisure preparation for Upper Mustang Overland Tour.

Day 3:
Drive to Pokhara (910m/2,985ft)

Driving Duration: 7-8 hours
Total Distance: 220 kilometers

Today, we get set to leave the Kathmandu valley. After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will pick you up for an overland drive to Pokhara city. The vehicle follows a route along the Prithivi highway that is full of countryside views of Nepal. Most of the time, we will be driving along the Trishuli River with fascinating views of terraced farmland, traditional villages, and lush hills on sight. We even passed a rafting spot on the way to Pokhara. After around seven hours of drive, we reach the beautiful touristic hub of Nepal – Pokhara. We check in the hotel, freshen up and get ready for a relaxing exploration around the lakeside Pokhara. The pristine air, serene lake water, and mountains, lakeside Pokhara is a heavenly place to visit. In the evening, we return to our hotel. Spend your time at the hotel in Pokhara for the night.

Day 4:
Drive from Pokhara to Tatopani (2700M Elevation)

Driving Duration: 6-7 hours
Total Distance: 120 Kilometers approx.

After having your breakfast at Pokhara, today you will start your journey to Mustang. The route from Pokhara to Tatopani takes the west direction towards Beni. Admiring the views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain range, you will reach Tatopani. You can bath in the natural hot water spring at Tatopani. You will explore this beautiful village and stay overnight there.

Day 5:
Drive from Tatopani to Kagbeni (2804m. Elevation) and visit Muktinath Temple (3710 m. Elevation)

Driving Duration: 4-5 hours
Total Distance: 98 kilometers approx

After exploring the Tatopani village, you will drive towards Kagbeni via Jomsom today. Jomsom is a village where you can find several local markets. You can taste the local yak cheese in Jomsom.

From Jomsom, you will drive towards Muktinath. You will visit the culturally significant Muktinath temple. After exploring the temple, you will drive to Kagbeni.

Day 6:
Drive to Ghami Village (3510 m. Elevation) Via Syngboche Pass (4410 m. Elevation).

Driving Duration: 6 hours
Total Distance: 35 Kilometres

After all formalities of permit we start drive from Kagbeni to Ghami. During journey we will also visit stupas and Mani wall. Even You can stop your jeep between your journey to take rest and click some beautiful pictures. Driving through Syagboche pass, you will take the route to Ghami. Admiring the beautiful mountain passes and unique landscapes of the region, you finally reach the village of Ghami.

Overnight at Ghami.

Day 7:
Drive to Lo Manthang (3840 m. Elevation)

Driving Duration: 4-5 hours
Total Distance: 17 kilometers

After having your breakfast at Ghami, today you will drive towards the hidden King kingdom of Lo Manthang today. At first, you will drive towards Tsarang via Lo Pass. crossing the Ghami river, the route takes you to a plateau crossing several Mani Walls. After a few hours of drive, you will reach Tsarang which is also known as Charang.

From Tsarang, you will drive towards the capital of Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang. Along the way to Lo Manthang, you will be able to see some of the magnificent mountains such as Mount Annapurna, Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Bhrikurti. You will cross the Lho Pass before you reach the beautiful Lo Manthang Valley.

After reaching Lo Manthang, you will stop and jeep and stay at one of the hotels overnight.

Day 8:
Exploring Lo Manthang.

Lo Manthang is a restricted region in the Upper Mustang. The region belongs to king Lo and is highly influenced by Tibetan culture and lifestyle. Today, you will basically spend your day by exploring this isolated region of Upper Mustang.

After having your breakfast in the morning, you will visit the 4-story palace of the KIng. some of the Royal families still live in the palace. Other than this, you will drive towards the Jampa monastery, which is the oldest monastery of the region that was built in 15 century. Some of the other monasteries that you will explore today are Chodey Gompa, Thubchen Gompa, and many others.

In the evening, you will return back to your hotel and stay overnight.

Day 9:
Drive back to Jomsom (2743 m . Elevation).

Driving Duration: 6-7 hours
Total Distance: 58 kilometers

From Lo Manthang, you will drive back to Tsarang and Ghami following the same route. You will drive all the way, crossing some of the villages and Mani Walls. On reaching Tetang, you will follow the route to Kagbeni passing the villages of Chusang, Syanboche, and Chele.

After a short drive from these villages, you will reach Kagbeni. From Kagbeni, you will drive towards Jomsom. Overnight at Jomsom.

Day 10:
Drive backn to Pokhara

Driving Duration: 7-8 hours
Total Distance: 158 kilometers

From Jomsom, you will drive back to Pokhara today. Following the way to Lete, Tatopani you will reach Pokhara. It will take you around 6-7 hours drive to reach Pokhara from Jomsom. Viewing the scenic beauty of the region just outside your window, you will reach Pokhara.

Day 11:
Drive to Kathmandu

Driving Duration: 7-8 hours
Total Distance: 220 kilometers

You will have your breakfast at hotel in Pokhara and drive towards Kathmandu on this day. After driving for about 7-8 hours you will finally reach Kathmandu. You will be transferred to your hotel as soon as you reach Kathmandu.

At the evening, you can walk around the alleys of Thamel if you want.

Day 12:
Departure

How many people in the group to Upper Mustang Overland Tour?

The restricted area requires special permits to enter Upper Mustang.
To run this trip requires a minimum of 2-3 people, more people is much better it will lower the cost slightly. As per season, wise expect a minimum of 2-3 or a maximum of 14 people in the group for this wonderful overland adventure.

How much for the special permit for Upper Mustang?

Since the area was allowed to visit by foreign travelers to Upper Mustang, a special permit is required. At present all foreign visitors require to pay a sum of US $ 500 per person for 10 days and US $ 50 extra per person for additional from Kagbeni to Kagbeni. Includes ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) entry permit fee of 3,000 NPR for each person which is about US $30.

How are the accommodation and food on route to Upper Mustang?

Places like Kagbeni, Ghami, Charang, and Lo-Manthang do have nice lodges of tourist standard as well as guest houses. Serves good meals of variations from Continental, Indian, and Chinese to Nepalese popular dish of Dal Bhat (boiled rice with lentil soup and mild veg or meat curry where available).
