Tsum Valley Trekking is quite different to other mainstream and popular adventure around the Himalayas. One of the hidden Himalayan Shangri-La was opened to the outside world in 2002. Overview

Tsum Valley is populated by the indigenous tribes the Lobas, the highlanders of the lost and forgotten valley of Tsum. Where trekkers can explore the remote isolated traditional villages of Tsum, also known as the valley of happiness.
An exciting and most interesting adventure on off the beaten trails, away and far-off from the mainstream of civilization. Where trail follows on famous Manaslu Circuit route for some days, and then leaves the main trails heading further east.
The adventure leads beyond Manaslu Himalayas and behind massif Ganesh Himal at Mu Gompa, after walking through Chumling and Nile villages.
With ample time to explore the traditional farm villages adorned with age-old ancient cultures of Tibetan Buddhism. Enjoy the perfect wilderness and local immense cultures in the harmony of a close Himalayan Mountain backdrop.

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

On arrival at Kathmandu-Nepal international airport, transfer to hotel where guide will provide briefing, regarding the treks. After checking into your rooms and getting refreshed for the jet lag.

Day 2:
In Kathmandu with optional sightseeing tour and trek preparations.

A day in Kathmandu can enjoy options of a sightseeing tour around Kathmandu around places of great cultural and historical interest. The rest of the day is free preparation for Tsum Valley trek.

Day 3:
Drive to Machha Khola 900 m / 2,952 feet approx. 8 hours.

A long day drive but interesting towards Nepal Mid-West to reach the starting point of the trek at Machha-Khola. A small farm town within the district of Gorkha heavily farmed areas of warm temperature. At Machha-Khola in the comfort of a nice simple lodge for overnight halt.

Day 4:
Trek to Jagat 1,340 m -06 hours walks.

Start the morning first day walk heading north through several farm villages, on a gradual path through Sal forest. As the walk heads uphill into cooler areas, reaching a nice hill village at Jagat. The entrance point of restricted areas, where trekkers need special permits. Overnight in a nice lodge, with time to explore and witness the local cultures of both Hindu and Buddhism religions.

Day 5:
Trek to Lokpa 2,240 m via Deng 1,800 m - 06 hrs.

Morning walk entering the restricted areas, as trail follows to slow climb to a nice farm village Philim. The adventure continues with down and uphill paths crossing bridges, and then reaching cooler areas at Deng village.

From Deng onwards within strong Buddhism cultures similar to its Tibetan predecessors. A walk leads further northeast at Lokpa village for an overnight halt after leaving the main trail of Manaslu Circuit.

Day 6:
Trek to Chumling 2,386 m - 06 hrs.

From here onwards enter the elusive wonderland of Tsum Valley, as the walk enters a narrow gorge. Heading for a short descent, the climb continues amidst the rhododendron and pine forested paths. Walking through farm villages to Lungwa Khola, then reaching Chumling village for the first overnight stop within Tsum Valley.

Day 7:
Trek to Chokanparo 3,010 m - 05 hrs.

After the first night in the Tsum area, as altitude gains slowly walk leads higher facing grand views of Ganesh and Manaslu Himal range. As walks lead down to cross a bridge over Smatiking Khola, the views of Ganesh Himal remain constant. Which is above 7,422 m high, finally reaching Chokanparo village for an overnight stop, in the comfort of a simple lodge.

Day 8:
Trek to Nile 3,361 m visiting Millerepa cave - 06 hrs.

The adventure moves towards higher ground leading closer to upper Tsum valley at Nile (Ne-lay). The morning begins with a climb reaching an open valley around windswept terrain, where few small trees of willow and Populus survive.
The walk continues up facing delightful views of Ganesh and Manaslu Himal, after a pleasant walk, finally ending the day at the Nile for an overnight halt.

Before reaching the Nile, an optional side hike to a holy meditation cave of 11th Century Saint Milarepa, a famous Guru for Buddhist followers. Saint Milarepa is a poet, singer and tantric guru, his song and good teaching are still remembered by all Tibetans and Buddhist devotees. The Nile is a lovely village in Tsum Valley and has a much better lodge and food menu for trekkers delights.

Day 9:
Trek to Mu Gompa 3,700 m - 04 hrs.

Today’s walks lead to our main highlight at Mu Gompa and the highest point of the adventure. The trail climbs to higher areas facing wonderful vistas of towering peaks. After hours of good walking reach Mu Gompa for overnight stop.

The highest spot with the oldest monastery of Tsum Valley, the ancient monastery a small Gompa built of mud and stone. Visit the interior treasures of age-old relics and idols of Lord Buddha with several famous Gurus.

Day 10:
Trek to Rachen Gompa 3, 240 m -04 hrs.

Another short day walk of a few hours, after an exciting time at Mu Gompa, the return trek leads to another important monastery of Rachen Gompa. Morning walks down on the winding trail with a short climb, but the descent to Rachen Gompa for an overnight stop. At Rachen Gompa premises, transfer to a small simple lodge, and enjoy a tour of Rachen monastery.

Day 11:
Trek back to Chumling - 05 hrs.

On our last day around Tsum, the valley of happiness starts in the morning and the downhill to Chumling village. A walk leads back within tree lines, and the trail follows on a nice pleasant trail adorned with Buddhist prayer walls. Then reaching Chumling village for the last overnight stop within Tsum Valley.

Day 12:
Trek to Lokpa 2,240 m - 05 hrs.

On leaving the last village of Tsum Valley, return journey on the same interesting route to Lokpa. Back on the main trail of Manaslu Circuit, transfer into a nice simple lodge and enjoy the afternoon marvelling at the surrounding scenery.

Day 13:
Trek to Jagat 1,340 m - 05 hrs.

From Lokpa village, morning on downhill following a river downstream facing views of waterfalls. The walk continues through Samba, Tingding Chhupyang to Philim village, and then another hour of descent reaches Jagat village for overnight stop.

Day 14:
Trek to Machha-Khola - 05 hrs.

Spending the last overnight on the high hill village at Jagat, morning on downhill to low warm paddy fields. Walk follows Burlung Khola and to Tatopani small village, as trail leads Yaruphant. Continue descending past few farm villages and well-tended fields following the Budi-Gandaki to Machha-Khola for last overnight around Gorkha district.

Day 15:
Drive to Kathmandu-08 hours.

Leaving the Mid-West Himalayas around Gorkha district, an early morning drive from Machha-Khola. The road follows downhill to Arughat town, and then on the good road reaching the main highway. An exciting drive past low warm farm villages and towns, then climb towards Kathmandu valley and the city.
After a marvellous experience on Tsum Valley trek, transfer to your hotel.

Day 16:
Free day for individual activities.

Enjoy a free day in Kathmandu after a wonderful Tsum Valley Trek. Options for an exciting tour of Patan / Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, or enjoy individual activities shopping souvenirs of Nepal.

Day 17:
International departure for homeward bound

The last day in Kathmandu and in Nepal, its time for your international flight transfer to the airport. Then bid farewell to the guide and staff as you enter the airport terminal for the homeward-bound flight, after a marvellous enjoyable adventure on Tsum Valley Trekking.

Where is Tsum Valley located?

Tsum Valley is located in Nepal Mid-West behind east of world’s 8th Highest Mt. Manaslu and its range of peaks. On the North side of massif Ganesh Himal within remote corners of Gorkha district.

How are the lodge and food on Tsum Valley Trekking?

Around main villages of Jagat, Lokpa, Chokanparo and Nile standard lodges. Very few places with attached baths and toilets, and the lodges offer a comprehensive food menu. Includes continental, Chinese, Indian, Nepali or Tibetan foods served in a nice big warm dining hall. But at Mu Gompa, the accommodation is the basic and simple and limited food menu.

Is Tsum Valley falls within a restricted area?

Tsum Valley was closed for outside travellers for many decades, it was open from 2002 onwards. The restricted area where trekkers require special permits to enter upper Manaslu and Tsum Valley from Jagat village onwards.
The reason is to control the flow of mass trekkers to save the pristine environment, as well as to be close to the Tibet border.

What to expect around Tsum Valley?

Lower areas of tropical vegetation with Sal species trees, further higher above 2,000 m. The hills are covered with alpine bushes and a forest of rhododendron, blue pines and first tree lines. After the Nile towards Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa tree lines disappears for arctic cold terrain.

Do we have facilities to re-charge our electronic gadgets?

Nearly all villages and lodges have the facilities of hydroelectricity or are run by private solar power. Where all trekkers can use the facilities to charge electronic gadgets, paying an extra fee.
