Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal is one of the world’s most respected spiritual journeys that takes travelers to Mount Kailash and the sacred Lake Mansarovar in Tibet. With the Horse Year 2026 approaching, many pilgrims believe completing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 during this cycle brings multiplied spiritual merit according to Tibetan Buddhist belief.
Pilgrims can choose from several routes to reach this holy destination, from the helicopter route to the Lhasa route. However, the Kailash route from Kathmandu, Timmure to Gyirong is the most popular choice. It takes travelers on a long Himalayan road journey through Nepal and Tibet with a visit to famous monasteries such as Pakba Monastery and Drakkar Taso Monastery (Milarepa Cave) before continuing toward Lake Mansarovar and the sacred Kora around Mount Kailash.
With more than 12 years of operation and hundreds of successful past groups, this pilgrimage has become a trusted journey for spiritual aspirants, adventure travelers, photographers, and high-altitude explorers looking for something beyond a typical trek.
Mount Kailash (6,638M) is considered the abode of Lord Shiva and the spiritual center of the universe. Likewise, Lake Mansarovar is believed to have been created by Lord Brahma and symbolizes purity. Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers all respect this holy region, and many believe that completing the journey leads to moksha, self-purification, and liberation.
If visiting Mount Kailash has been your dream for years, this is the right time to start preparing for it. We have designed a 14-day overland package for groups of 5–20 travelers, including airport transfers, hotels, Tibet permits, and medical support. Why the 2026 Horse Year Is Special for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Doing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2026 is very special because it is the Horse Year. It is a rare event that happens only once every 60 years. In the Chinese and Tibetan zodiac, each year has an animal, and the horse comes every 12 years. The last Tibetan year of the horse was in 2014, and now the next begins on February 17, 2026.
Many believe that during the Horse Year, the spiritual power of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar is stronger than usual. This makes completing the Kailash Kora very lucky. Pilgrims say that strength and determination parikrama in the Horse Year is equal to 12 parikramas in other years. So they will receive many times more blessings.
Moreover, since the horse represents progress and courage, it is believed to give pilgrims the strength and determination to complete this sacred journey. Also, this year is linked to important spiritual events. The famous Buddhist poet Milarepa climbed Mount Kailash in a Horse Year, and the birth of Buddha Sakyamuni is also connected to the Horse Year.
This way, the Horse Year is one of the best times for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It brings good luck, prosperity, and spiritual growth. For anyone planning the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, 2026 is a rare and very special chance.

This day is another driving day from Saga to Darchen. Darchen is the gateway to Mount Kailash Parvat. The drive route from Darchen to Lake Mansarovar follows the upper Yarlung Tsangpo River (Brahmaputra) and passes through alpine pastures where you might see yak herds and Tibetan nomads. As the drive continues, you will enter Zhongba. Zhongba is a high-altitude desert. Here, the rolling Paryong sands contrast beautifully with distant snow-capped mountains. If you get lucky, you may spot wild Tibetan donkeys (Kiang) running across the sand dunes.
Likewise, before reaching Lake Manasarovar, you will pass Gongzhucuo Lake. It is a small green freshwater lake at 4,680M. You will also cross Mayum La Pass at 5,211M to reach the holy Lake Manasarovar. Lake Mansarovar’s clear waters reflect the surrounding mountains, including Mount Namunani, and the distant Mount Kailash range. On its shore, colorful prayer flags flutter in the wind, and nearby is Lake Rakshastal, also called the ‘Ghost Lake’ for its deep blue water and desolate surroundings.
After spending some time at the lake, you will continue your drive to Darchen. You will arrive at Darchen in the evening. This small town at 4,650M is the starting point for the Mount Kailash Kora. Overnight at Darchen.
On this day, we prefer to stay in Darchen, as it is a more developed town with better hotel facilities than Lake Mansarovar. However, if the journey coincides with a full moon at Lake Mansarovar or the group wishes to stay by the sacred lake, we may choose to spend the night at Lake Mansarovar instead.

Saga Dawa Festival & Full Moon Dates for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026
The Saga Dawa Festival is considered the holiest time to visit Mount Kailash. The festival celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha and falls on the full moon day of the fourth month in the Tibetan lunar calendar. In 2026, the main Saga Dawa celebration already took place on May 31, while the full festival month runs from May 17 to June 16, 2026.
During this period, thousands of pilgrims gather near Tarboche to raise a prayer flagpole decorated with colorful prayer flags. Many locals believe that if the flagpole stands straight after being raised, it brings peace, health, and prosperity for the coming year. Below is the complete list of astronomical full moon dates for the 2026 Yatra season:
| Month | Full Moon Date in Tibet | Spiritual Importance |
| May | May 30, 2026 | Saga Dawa Full Moon (Main Festival Day) |
| June | June 29, 2026 | Dev Snan Purnima / Jyeshtha Purnima |

| August | August 27, 2026 | Shravana Purnima / Raksha Bandhan |
| September | September 26, 2026 | Bhadrapada Purnima (End of Yatra Season) |
Spiritual Significance of Kailash Mansarovar Across Four Faiths
Mount Kailash is often called one of the most mysterious mountains on Earth. It is not famous for its height, but for its deep religious significance to four religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. Hindus believe it is the home of Lord Shiva. Buddhists link it to the deity Demchok. Jains believe their first Tirthankara attained liberation here, and Bon followers see it as the center of their universe. Also, pilgrims believe that walking one full circle (kora) around Mount Kailash can wash away bad karma and bring spiritual peace.
Many devotees also report seeing the face of Lord Shiva in the rock and snow on the mountain’s south side, especially when the light hits it at a certain angle. This adds to the feeling that the mountain is alive and sacred. Even satellite images taken by NASA in 2016 showed patterns that some people feel look like a Lord Shiva face, which further reinforces the beliefs of many devotees.
Understanding the Different Types of Kailash Kora
The circumambulation of Mount Kailash, called the Kora, is one of the most sacred rituals in the world. Pilgrims believe this journey cleanses the spirit and supports inner growth. The Kora can be performed in three ways: the Outer Kora, Inner Kora, and Spiral Kora, depending on the spiritual purpose. Each type of Kailash Kora offers a different way to connect with the “Precious Snow Mountain”.
Outer Kora: The Outer Kora is the most common and widely followed route. It follows the traditional path used by thousands of devotees for centuries. The focus here is steady effort, patience, and humility. All religions that revere Mount Kailash consider the Outer Kora a complete pilgrimage.
Inner Kora: The Inner Kora is also known as the Nandi Kora. It is more demanding and personal than Outer Kora. This Kora takes pilgrims closer to the southern face of Mount Kailash. Not everyone attempts this Kora. Only those who seek deep self-reflection and have received guidance from monks or spiritual teachers try it. Traditionally, pilgrims complete 13 Outer Koras before doing the Inner Kora.
Spiral Kora: The Spiral Kora is not a single trip but a lifelong spiritual path. Pilgrims circle Mount Kailash many times, sometimes over several years. They believe that repeating the Kora slowly removes ego, desire, and attachment. This form is very rare. People usually attempt it based on personal vows, spiritual visions, or long-term goals rather than a fixed route.
Look at the table below for other details:
| Feature | Outer Kora | Inner Kora | Spiral Kora |
| Distance covered and duration | 52-56KM. 3 days | 30–34KM. 1 to 2 days | Varies ( multiple outer koras plus inner and additional ritual routes) |
| Highest Altitude reached | 5,630M at Dolma La Pass | 5,860M at Saptarishi Cave | Up to and beyond Inner Kora passes |
| Start and end point | Darchen/Darchen | Darchen/Darchen | Darchen/Darchen |
| Terrain condition | Well-defined trails, gradual ascents, rocky paths, glacial moraines, long climbs, and descents | Unmarked trail, steep rock, scree, rugged, snow/ice sections, sometimes scrambling near cliffs | Mixed Outer + Inner + additional high terrain |
| Spiritual focus and impact | High. Considered enough to cleanse heavy past karma, one full kora is said to equal a lifetime of regular practice | Higher. Believed to bring deeper purification than the outer circuit | Highest. Deep immersion & enlightenment focus. Each additional “layer” of the spiral is said to multiply merit and insight many times |
| Accommodation and logistics facilities | Tea houses are available. Also, yaks or porters are available and vehicle support to and from Darchen | There are no real lodges on the inner routes. Need to rely on cave shelters, tents, monasteries, or self-support | Camping/self-supported only |
| Difficulty | Moderately challenging but manageable for fit walkers. The main difficulties are altitude and long trekking days | Extremely demanding, requires strong physical fitness, careful footing, and strong acclimatization to high altitude | Exceptionally demanding. Need serious endurance, navigation skills, and deep commitment |

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 is primarily conducted via routes through Nepal or India, with the Nepal route being the most popular due to its shorter duration and diverse travel options like helicopters. Mount Kailash rises high in the Trans-Himalayan range, within the Ngari Prefecture of Tibet (China), close to where the borders of India and Nepal come together. To the south lies the Lipulekh Pass region of India’s Uttarakhand, while to the west and southwest is Nepal’s Humla District.
This area forms a tri-junction zone, where the boundaries of the three regions come very close. And because of its unique position, pilgrims can reach it through routes from both India (Lipulekh Pass, Uttarakhand) and Nepal (via Rasuwagadhi route). At the base of Mount Kailash, there is Lake Mansarovar, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world:tripoint between India, Nepal, and Tibet
Attractions Near Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar
Besides Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake, there are several other attractions that you can visit during your Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Trip. They are:
Yam Dwar: Gateway to Death’s God
To reach Mount Kailash, one must pass through Yam Dwar. The word “Yam” refers to the Hindu god of death, who judges the deeds of every soul, while “Dwar” means gate or passage. Together, it means “Gateway to the God of Death”. Yam Dwar is located near Darchen in the Ngari region of Tibet, at an altitude of about 4,724M above sea level. It sits among snow peaks and vast plateaus.
It is another one of the most sacred sites to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers. Pilgrims see passing through the Yam Dwar as a moment of surrender, where they let go of worldly attachments and begin their inner journey towards enlightenment.
Gauri Kunda: Birthplace of Lord Ganesha
Gauri Kund, also known as the Lake of Compassion, is a sacred water body located along the trail when descending from Dolma La Pass during the 2nd day of the Kailash Kora. This holy lake is also called Parvati Sarovar because it is deeply connected to Goddess Parvati and her devotion.
According to Hindu mythology, this is the place where Goddess Parvati created her son, Lord Ganesha. It is believed that while bathing at Gauri Kund, she used the turmeric paste from her body to form the image of a boy and then breathed life into him, making him her son. Later, Lord Shiva, unaware of who the boy was, severed Ganesha’s head during a misunderstanding. Lord Shiva then restored his life by placing the head of a wandering elephant on his body, fulfilling Goddess Parvati’s wish.
Because of this divine story, Gauri Kund is seen as a symbol of love, creation, and compassion. Many pilgrims stop here to offer prayers and reflect on the sacred bond between mother and child, as well as on the values of purity, forgiveness, and devotion.
Ashtapad: Sacred Site to Jain Society
Ashtapad is a holy place for the Jain community near Mount Kailash in Tibet, at about 4,900M above sea level. To reach it, pilgrims must complete the inner parikrama (Kora), out of all other different types of Mount Kailash Koras. According to Jain beliefs, this is where the first Jain Tirthankara, Rishabadeva, attained Salvation (Nirvana). Later, his son, King Bharat, built a palace of crystals and gems at the site to honor his father.
Ashtapad Darshan was open to pilgrims until 2013. After an accident where several people died, it is no longer open. Visiting Ashtapad is not included in our tour packages, but it is still a very important and sacred site for the Jain community.
Freshwater Gongzhucuo Lake
Gongzhucuo Lake is a small, green freshwater lake in Burang County of Ngari Prefecture in Tibet. It lies on the route from Saga to Lake Manasarovar, along the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway. This lake is one of the few freshwater lakes on the mostly salty Tibetan plateau.
Surrounded by a vast, mostly desert-like landscape, it stands out as a peaceful and scenic landmark. After visiting Gongzhucuo, travelers cross Mayum La Pass to enter the Ngari region. From here, they get their first view of Lake Manasarovar and the distant Mount Kailash.

How to Reach Kailash Mansarovar from Kathmandu?
You can reach Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar from Kathmandu in two ways: by helicopter and by overland drive. Both option offers a different travel style based on time, comfort, and experience. You can choose the option, taking into account your available time, Kailash Mansarovar Yatra cost, and how slowly or quickly you want to experience the journey.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Helicopter
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by helicopter route is the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Kailash and Mansarovar Lake. It is ideal for travelers with limited time and those who want to avoid long road travel and reduce physical strain. It takes about 9 to 11 days. In this journey, you will fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Simikot. From Simikot, you will take a helicopter flight to Hilsa, followed by a short drive to enter Tibet.
You can still complete the full Kailash Kora and take a holy dip in Lake Mansarovar. The cost is higher, but the journey is quicker and easier. Packages usually include flights, permits, transport, accommodation, and meals. When returning, you will fly from Simikot to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Overland Drive
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by overland drive is the traditional way to reach Kailash Mansarovar. The drive follows the route through Rasuwagadhi–Gyirong border from Kathmandu, and then continues by bus or jeep to Saga, Paryang, Mansarovar, and Darchen.
This option takes a few extra days. But it allows natural acclimatization and a deeper travel experience.
You slowly move from Nepal’s green hills to the wide Tibetan plateau, with gradual altitude gain. It is more budget-friendly and gives more time to see monasteries, landscapes, and local life. The package still covers permits, transport, lodging, meals, and support during the Kailash Kora. The return journey is in drive as well.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa is the most comfortable and culturally rich route to reach Mount Kailash. Instead of crossing border areas by helicopter or difficult mountain roads at the beginning of the trip, pilgrims fly directly into Lhasa. Pilgrims visit important Tibetan cities, monasteries, and high Himalayan landscapes before reaching the holy region of Lake Mansarovar and Darchen.
The full journey takes around 14 days, starting from a cultural visit in Lhasa before driving toward Shigatse, Saga, and Lake Mansarovar. The Kailash Parikrama then continues through Dirapuk, Dolma La Pass, and Zutulpuk before returning toward Nepal through Gyirung.
Because this route covers flights, longer road travel inside Tibet, hotels, permits, and extended acclimatization days, the package cost is higher than standard overland trips. The price starts from around USD 3,350 and can reach USD 3,577 or more depending on group size, hotel category, and transport services.
Altitude Sickness on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: Prevention and Treatment
Altitude sickness is the biggest health challenge during the Kailash Mansarovar journey. Because of the rapid altitude gain of around 1,100M in a single day, even healthy travelers can develop Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Early symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, tiredness, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping. If ignored, the condition can become dangerous and affect the lungs or brain, leading to serious breathing problems, confusion, loss of balance, or inability to walk properly.
The best protection against altitude sickness is slow acclimatization. Travelers should choose itineraries that have enough rest days at places like Keyrung, Saga, or Taklakot. Drinking enough water, avoiding alcohol and smoking, eating light meals, and walking at a slow pace also reduce the risk.
Many doctors recommend medicines like Acetazolamide (Diamox) to support acclimatization, though travelers should consult a doctor before using it. Pilgrims must never ignore warning signs at high altitude. If symptoms become worse instead of improving with rest, the safest treatment is to stop climbing, use oxygen if available, and descend to a lower altitude immediately.
Which Kailash Route Is Right For You?
Choosing the right route for your Kailash Manasarovar Yatra depends on your budget, fitness level, available time, and nationality. If you want the fastest and easiest journey, choose the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by helicopter route. If you want the best balance of cost, comfort, and acclimatization, choose Nepal Overland via the Kyirong route. If you want a government-supported, mostly road-based journey with moderate effort, choose the Nathu La Pass route. And if you want the most local, spiritual, and physically challenging pilgrimage, choose the Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand) route.
| Route | Days | Cost Range | Best For |
| Nepal (Overland via Kyirong) | 14 days | USD 2,770 (INR 2,64,682) | Budget-conscious pilgrims wanting a spiritual journey |
| Nepal (Helicopter via Hilsa) | 11 days | Varies (helicopter pricing fluctuates) | Pilgrims with limited time who prefer a shorter, quicker journey |
| Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand) | 23–25 days | USD 3,000–3,600 (INR 2,86,660-3,43,991) | Fit pilgrims, spiritual seekers, adventure lovers |
| Nathu La Pass (Sikkim) | 18–22 days | USD 2,500–3,500 (INR 2,38,880-3,34,435) | Older pilgrims wanting govt route with less trekking and more driving |

There are certain rules that an Indian pilgrim should consider here. An Indian pilgrim should obtain these permits and a Chinese visa before leaving India. Also, Indian citizens doing the Kailash and Mansarovar yatra via Nepal must obtain a Chinese Visa from the Embassy of China in New Delhi, not from the Embassy of China in Kathmandu. The visa processing time can take anywhere between 4-5 days. The duration is a bit short for Nepali citizens.

Good to know: The Chinese Government banned the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from India in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rising tensions between India and China following border clashes that year. Now, after five years, both countries have agreed to restart the pilgrimage for Indian travelers to Tibet in 2025. The Indian government organizes the Yatra through two main routes: Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand (near the India–Nepal–China border) and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from India
Indian pilgrims can also choose the Nepal route for the Kailash Mansarovar journey because it is faster and easier to organize. The helicopter route is currently the most popular choice for travelers who want to reduce long road travel and save time. The journey starts from Delhi, Lucknow, or Kathmandu and continues through Nepalgunj, Simikot, and Hilsa before entering Tibet. This route takes around 9–11 days and costs between INR 2.8 lakh and INR 3.5 lakh per person.
The overland road route from Nepal is another popular option for Indian travelers who prefer a longer mountain journey in the Tibetan plateau. The trip starts from Kathmandu and continues by road through Syabrubesi and the Rasuwagadhi–Kyirong border into Tibet. This route takes around 13–14 days and costs INR 2.25 lakh to INR 2.6 lakh per person.
Experience Culture And Language Shaped By 3 Nations in Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
The Kailash region lies in the tripoint between India, Nepal, and Tibet (China). Thus, you will find the culture, tradition, and languages influenced by these three countries. People here live simple lives filled with faith and spirituality, and the cultures mix beautifully across the borders. They speak different languages, like Tibetan, Chinese, and Nepali. Tibetan is the main language spoken in Western Tibet, where Mount Kailash is located. Chinese is used for official work and by the local government. Likewise, Nepali is common among traders, pilgrims, and guides coming through the Nepal border area. Guides, travelers, and some locals also speak English to communicate with foreign pilgrims.
Local people also follow different religions like Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Bon. Though their beliefs differ, everyone sees this place as a symbol of purity, peace, and divine power. Further, out of deep respect, no one is allowed to climb Mount Kailash. Locals believe it would disturb the sacred balance of the mountain. There are no permanent buildings nearby as well. Instead of climbing, pilgrims walk around the Kailash in a 42KM journey from Tarboche called the parikrama, which represents faith and spiritual cleansing. In this holy region, the borders of India, Nepal, and Tibet disappear, and the same devotion and peace unite all who travel to Kailash Mansarovar.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Eligibility and Fitness Requirements
The Mount Kailash pilgrimage takes place in a remote high-altitude region, so travelers must meet certain eligibility and health requirements before joining the journey. Travelers must carry a passport with at least 6 months of validity from the travel date. Maintaining a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI), preferably below 27, is also recommended for safer travel. - Practice climbing stairs regularly to prepare for the uphill climb to Dolma La Pass.

- Carry a recent medical fitness certificate signed by a registered doctor within 30–60 days before departure.
- Stay hydrated, avoid smoking and alcohol before the trip, and maintain a balanced diet during preparation.
