Travel Guide
The Druk Path Trek is one of Bhutan’s most scenic and rewarding short treks. It follows an ancient trading route between Paro and Thimphu and takes you through lush pine forests, alpine meadows, high mountain passes, and clear mountain lakes along the Bhutan – Tibet border.
Your adventure begins in Paro town, with a gradual ascent through pine forests and apple orchards. As you continue, the trail climbs above the tree line, crossing scenic sites like Tshokam, Jana Tsho, and Phajoding Gompa. En route, you may see yak herder camps, visit sacred temples, and camp beside high-altitude lakes surrounded by snowy peaks.
The trek concludes near Thimphu, after a gentle descent through peaceful pine and juniper forests. The route covers altitudes from 2,200 to 3,950 meters and provides stunning views of peaks like Mount Jumolhari, Jichu Drake, and Gangkar Puensum (the highest mountain in Bhutan and the highest unclimbed mountain in the world).
One of the best times to do the Druk Path Trek is in spring (April–May), when the trail is covered with blooming rhododendrons, or in autumn (September–November), when the weather is clear and the mountain views are at their best. Cultural highlights include exploring traditional Bhutanese villages, dzongs (fortresses), and famous landmarks like the Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

The second day of the Druk Path trek begins with a delicious morning breakfast. After breakfast, you will hike to the Taktsang Monastery (Tiger Nest) perched on the hilltop. This iconic site is one of Bhutan’s most sacred and visually stunning landmarks. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche, the revered spiritual master, flew to this very spot on the back of a tigress and meditated for 3 months. The monastery was later built in this holy place in 1684.
The trail winds through pine forests and offers breathtaking views of the Paro Valley below. About halfway down the return trail, you’ll stop for lunch at a traditional restaurant decorated with prayer flags with views of the monastery in the distance. Afterwards, you will continue back to Paro, where you’ll rest. Overnight stay in Paro.

Take a moment to rest and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You may come across Himalayan wild animals and birds too, so keep a lookout.
You will arrive at Jele Dzong, located at 3,400 m above sea level, in the evening. Your campsite is a few hundred meters downhill in a vast meadow, where yak herder’s camp while they migrate their herds. Spring and Autumn are two ideal seasons for trekking the Druk Path. The Spring season lasts from March to May, whereas the Autumn season lasts from September to November. The weather is fantastic during Spring and Autumn, and the temperature ranges from 20 to 25 degrees in Spring and around 15 to 18 degrees in Autumn. The trails are covered in spring with flowering blooms and lush rhododendron forests. In contrast, in autumn, the atmosphere is covered with brown to golden leaves, which beautifully reflect the sunrise.
Monsoon and Winter are the least ideal seasons for trekking. The Monsoon season begins in the middle of June and ends in August, whereas the winter season begins in December and ends in February. The constant moderate to heavy rainfall creates a poor atmosphere. On the other hand, the winter season has dynamic weather and freezing temperatures with continuous fear of avalanches, making it very tough to trek the hilly trails.
The Druk Path Trek is a moderate to challenging trek in the lap of the Himalaya. This trek is moderate for trekkers with prior experience but much more challenging for beginners. Most of the trek itinerary spread across the remote trail between Paro and Thimphu and then to the high altitude of the several passes. Here are some factors of difficulty.
One significant trek difficulty that the trekkers face during the Druk Path trek is the high altitude. The trekkers will reach Jangchu La pass 4,180m/13,714ft. The trekkers start feeling the symptoms of altitude sickness after the altitude of 3000m, so after 4000m, the chance of altitude sickness increases even more.
The remote trail is another significant difficulty on the Druk Path Trek. The path through Thimphu and Paro is as remote and demanding as it can be, as there are no village settlements, so the trekkers have to stay in tents. At the high altitude, trekking outside in the colder climate is detrimental to health.
The terrain on the Druk Path Trek is rough and steep. Some of the terrain is steep, with challenging ascents and descents. The physical demand of the trek is difficult for even the modest trekkers, let alone the newcomers. Druk Path trek also passes through lush jungles, rocky ridges, peaks, and snowy mountains, making the 10-day trek even more challenging.
Bhutan, also known as the Land of Thunder Dragon, is one of the most underrated destinations for trekkers and tourists worldwide. Over the years, the number of tourists has been increasing due to its popularity. This is because Bhutan has been using a new approach to Sustainable development and Tourism.
In a world where even the most remote areas are affected by globalization, Bhutan has focused on happiness and well-being instead of just material wealth and rapid economic growth. The country’s approach is based on “Gross National Happiness,” introduced by His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, in the 1970s.
The new approach uses 33 different indicators to measure happiness and the country’s overall development. The four main pillars used for this approach are sustainable economic growth, cultural preservation, environmental governance, and good governance. These four pillars are further divided into nine more comprehensive ranges that record the Bhutanese people’s well-being.
Accommodation and Meals are significant factors for the high altitude Himalaya trek. When trekkers get healthy foods and get the appropriate place to rest, they feel relaxed and rejuvenated for the next day of trek. Let’s take a look at Accommodation and Meals throughout the trek.
Druk Path is the opportunity to experience and taste beautiful local and western meals throughout the trek. The trekkers can taste meals with delicious regional products and also have a chance to taste dishes made by expert Western chefs. Enjoy traditional Bhutanese delicacies like Ema Datshi (chilli and cheese), Momos (dumplings), and Thukpa (noodle soup), along with Western options like pasta, sandwiches, and omelettes. The dishes might be more local in remote trail areas but are equally tasty.
Accommodation must be essential for a comfortable stay and sleep during the trekking days. In this trek, the trekkers will stay in comfortable lodges or three-star hotels in cities, and in remote areas, they will stay in camping tents. The campsites are crowded with spacious tenth spaces and places to burn bonfires to cook food and enjoy the stunning views of the valley and mountains.
Druk Path Trek is a challenging trek through the remote trails of Bhutan. Here are some packing essentials you might want to take during this tough trek.

Looking at the bar graph above, it’s clear that spiritual journeys that cross international borders, like tours to Tibet and Bhutan, are expensive. And there’s a good reason for that. These trips include several extra expenses that are quietly included in the package, like special permits (Tibet Travel Permits or Restricted Area Permits), government fees such as Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee, cross-border paperwork, local guides, monastery entry fees, remote area accommodation, and long overland drives that require reliable vehicles and higher fuel costs. All of these elements add to the trip cost.
In contrast, Nepal-based spiritual tours such as the “5 Days Nepal Tour Package” or the “Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour” are budget-friendly. These cultural tours only need accommodation, a private vehicle, a guide, and entrance fees to temples and spiritual heritage sites. There is no need to deal with international permits, border logistics, or a long overland drive, so the overall cost stays affordable.
Someone who wants to visit Muktinath in a single day, that too without a long drive or walk, should choose this Muktinath Heli Tour. In this tour, you fly directly from Kathmandu to Mustang. You will land close to Muktinath, so you will have enough time for worship, a holy bath, and nd quiet reflection before returning to Kathmandu the same day.
Highlights:
Bhutan, known as the Himalayan kingdom of peace, is the perfect destination for those seeking both spiritual and cultural immersion. In this 7-day Bhutan Tour, you’ll explore Bhutan’s main valleys, which are Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha. You will be visiting monasteries, traditional dzongs (fortified monasteries), and serene Himalayan landscapes. Highlights include Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) and ancient spiritual centers in Thimphu, which offer a deep connection to centuries-old Buddhist traditions.
With this itinerary, instead of rushing, you’ll move at a gentle pace. This means you have time to explore temples, interact with monks, and immerse yourself in relaxed evenings in small Bhutanese hotels that blend comfort with traditional design.
The Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Yatra is one of Himalayan 360’s most profound spiritual journeys, drawing pilgrims from Hindu, Buddhist, Jainist, and Bon traditions. After acclimatizing on the way to Tibet, travelers first arrive at Lake Mansarovar, where they can take a ritual bath and perform puja on the lakeshore.
The heart of the yatra is the kora, a three-day circumambulation of Mount Kailash (sacred abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in Hinduism and a holy spiritual center in Buddhism). Pilgrims cross high passes and valleys adorned with prayer flags and mani stones. While the trek is physically challenging, it is deeply spiritual.
